The Zodiac Killer 🔍 | Unsolved Mystery

Zodiac Killer crosshair symbol and coded letters representing the unsolved Zodiac cipher mystery in California - true crime cold case

A killer taunted an entire nation — and was never caught. He wrote coded letters. He demanded his crimes on the front page. Fifty-five years later, nobody knows his name. This is the Zodiac.

It Began in Vallejo

It began on December 20, 1968 — a lonely lover's lane outside Vallejo, California. Two teenagers sat in their car. Another car pulled up. Both were shot dead. No robbery. No motive. No witnesses.

Seven months later, the 4th of July — same pattern. A hooded figure with a flashlight approached a parked car, then opened fire. One victim survived — and gave police the first real description of the killer.

The Letters Started

Then the letters started. The San Francisco Chronicle received strange messages from a man who called himself... the Zodiac. Each one signed with the same chilling symbol: a crosshair.

The letters contained ciphers — puzzles of scrambled symbols. The Zodiac promised they revealed his identity. One was cracked in days. The rest refused to give up his name for decades.

The Lake Berryessa Attack

At Lake Berryessa, in broad daylight, a hooded figure wearing the crosshair symbol attacked two college students with a knife — then wrote the dates of his crimes on their car door, and walked away.

October 1969 — a cab driver in San Francisco was shot dead. The Zodiac mailed a torn piece of the victim's bloodied shirt to the Chronicle — to prove that he was the one who did it.

Then came the phone calls. "This is the Zodiac speaking." Bomb threats. Demands for coverage. Live television interrupted. An entire city held its breath, waiting for his next move.

The Trail Went Cold

The suspects piled up — hundreds of names, dozens of serious leads. Fingerprints, DNA from stamps, handwriting experts. Nothing ever matched cleanly. Every trail went cold.

In 2020, codebreakers finally cracked the Zodiac's famous cipher after fifty-one years. It taunted, it mocked — but it named no one. The Zodiac Killer remains unidentified. America's most famous faceless ghost.
