The Vending Machine's Lost Inventory 👻 | Horror Story — The Basement Machine That Sells Lost Things

Some horror stories are about haunted houses. This one is about something far more ordinary — and far more wrong: a vending machine in an office basement that sells things no one ever stocked.

It starts the way all the best scary stories start, with something small and easy to explain away. A night-shift worker buys chips. The machine gives him a child's retainer instead — small, pink, still damp, like it had just left someone's mouth.

The next night, a gold wedding ring, dated nineteen eighty seven. The night after, a house key with a paper tag in a child's handwriting: "in case I get lost."

He asks the building manager. The machine was emptied years ago. It isn't plugged in. It hasn't taken a coin since 2019. And yet every night at 3:33 AM, something inside it hums — and something new drops into the tray.

A bus pass with his own photo on it. A hospital bracelet with his own name. A phone with one contact saved: HIMSELF, and seventeen missed calls, all from 3:33 AM.

On the seventh night, he doesn't buy anything. He just stands there, watching. At 3:33 the machine shudders. The glass fogs from the inside. And into the tray drops a wallet — his wallet. His cards. His cash. His driver's license, photo smiling.

He reaches for it. Behind the glass, in the dark where the coils should be, something reaches back.

They found the machine still humming the next morning. The tray was empty. The man's wallet was never found. But the building manager swears that some nights, if you press your ear to the glass at 3:33 AM, you can hear coins dropping — one by one — into a tray that isn't there.
