Ray Delgado had worked the night shift at Harrowgate Academy for eleven years, and in all that time, the old school bell had never rung on its own. The rope was tied off every evening. Everyone knew that.

So when the bell rang three times at 2:14 in the morning, Ray felt his blood turn cold.

The academy stood empty for the summer — no students, no teachers, just Ray and his flashlight making rounds through dark hallways that smelled of chalk dust and old wood. He told himself it was the wind. But there was no wind that night.

The second thing he noticed was Room 12. Its light was on, glowing warm yellow across the courtyard. Room 12 had been locked since the spring term ended. Ray's keys jingled as his hands started to shake.

In the gymnasium, someone had dragged all the chairs into a perfect circle.

Ray did what any sensible guard would do — he went back to the security office and checked the cameras. Eleven screens showed empty hallways. But camera 12 showed something that made him drop his coffee.

On the screen, Ray could see himself standing in the courtyard, waving him in.

His phone buzzed. A text from a six-digit number: "THE BELL RANG THREE TIMES. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS."

Ray never told anyone what happened next. He finished his shift, handed in his resignation that same morning, and never set foot in Harrowgate Academy again. The school hired a new guard the following week. On his first night, at exactly 2:14 AM, the bell rang three times.
