The Room 1046 Mystery 🔍 | Unsolved Mystery — The Murder at the Hotel President

On January 2, 1935, a tall young man with a cauliflower ear walked into the Hotel President in Kansas City and asked for a room on an upper floor, away from the noise. He signed the register as Roland T. Owen, Los Angeles — and was given Room 1046.

Nothing about him made sense. He arrived with no luggage. When the bellboy showed him the room, Owen insisted the room be kept dark — he asked the boy to leave the one lit lamp off and lock the door from the outside. A strange request, but the bellboy obeyed.

Later that afternoon, the maid came to clean. Owen stopped her at the door — but what she glimpsed inside stayed with her: the room was dark, and a note on the dresser read, "Don, I will be back in fifteen minutes."

Phone calls came and went. The operator overheard fragments — a man's deep voice saying things like "No, Don, I don't want to eat. I am not hungry. I just had breakfast." Who was Don? Owen never explained.

On the morning of January 4, a different bellboy arrived with a note for Owen. He knocked. No answer. He used his key — and froze. Owen was on the floor, naked, bound hand and foot, beaten and stabbed. Blood was everywhere. With his last strength, the dying man whispered one word: "Don."

Roland T. Owen died hours later at the hospital. And then the case fell apart. No "Roland T. Owen" existed in Los Angeles. The phone number he gave was fake. The only fingerprints in the room belonged to a woman — never identified. A mysterious caller phoned the funeral home, paid for Owen's burial in cash, and vanished. Flowers arrived at the grave signed only "Louise."

Years later, a tip claimed Owen was really Artemus Ogletree — but his family never confirmed it, and the body in the grave was never exhumed for DNA.

Who was Don? Who was Louise? Why did a man with no luggage check into a dark hotel room, afraid of the light — and who beat him to death inside it? More than ninety years later, Room 1046 remains one of America's strangest unsolved murders.
